Canada plans to launch the National Heat Pump Rebate through an online portal in early 2027. The federal government has committed $2 billion over eight years to support eligible electric heat pump installations, with rebates of $2,000 or up to $10,000 depending on household income.

Who may qualify

The government’s October 8 program backgrounder says households below the median income may receive up to $10,000; other eligible homeowners may receive $2,000. Equipment must be on the eligible products list. The government says no pre- or post-installation energy audit will be required. The rebate program aims to reach up to 820,000 homeowners; separate building measures target another 280,000 rental units.

When to apply

The current federal program page says the portal is expected in early 2027. It also says the retroactivity period begins November 1, 2026: households that meet the final criteria and install an eligible heat pump on or after that date may apply once the program opens. The government says it will release more eligibility and application details as of November 1. The rebate is not open for applications yet.

The October backgrounder says the planned process will confirm approval within 24 hours and approve payment within five days after receipts are submitted. These are government targets for the future program, not a currently available service.

Updated October 25, 2026: Added the federal government’s November 1 retroactivity date and clarified that applications have not opened.
