Canada’s $5,000 trades bonus opens for applications November 16
Canada's $5,000 Red Seal Completion Bonus opens for applications November 16 - up to $50,000 lifetime across trades. Who qualifies, deadlines, documents.

Applications for the $5,000 Red Seal Completion Bonus open Monday, November 16, 2026 – a real federal payment for journeypersons who completed a registered apprenticeship in a designated Red Seal trade and earned their certification on or after April 1, 2025, according to Employment and Social Development Canada.
Who qualifies
Per ESDC’s published criteria, applicants must: be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person; not currently be attending high school; have completed an apprenticeship as a registered apprentice in a designated Red Seal trade; and hold jouneyperson certification from that apprenticeship, dated April 1, 2025 or later. The criteria tie the payment to completing an apprenticeship program – not to Red Seal exam results on their own.
The money adds up: $5,000 per Red Seal trade completed, up to a lifetime maximum of $50,000 across multiple trades, per the program’s overview page.
Deadlines – and one that is already running out
The deadlines depend on certification date. Workers certified between April 1, 2025 and November 15, 2026 have until May 31, 2027 to apply – which covers everyone certified since the program’s start date. Those certified on or after November 16, 2026 must apply within 12 months of certification. And once an application is started, all supporting documents are due within 28 calendar days or the application expires and must be restarted, per ESDC.
ESDC is urging tradespeople to gather documents before the portal opens: Social Insurance Number (with proof of status for permanent residents whose SIN starts with 9, and for protected persons), current mailing address, banking information for direct deposit, the exact designated trade name and certification date from the certificate, the province or territory of certification, and the provincial apprentice identification number. Additional jurisdiction-specific documents may be required.
Why the government is paying it
The bonus is part of the $8-billion Team Canada Strong investment, which aims to recruit, train and hire 80,000 to 100,000 new Red Seal trades workers over five years, according to the October 23 announcement – on top of nearly $1 billion a year in existing apprenticeship supports. ESDC projects more than 1.4 million skilled-trades job openings between 2024 and 2033. Jobs and Families Minister Patty Hajdu framed the bonus as recognition that earning certification takes years of effort, and the government wants apprentices to finish rather than drop out.
